Decatur is the closest of the larger towns we cover, 15 miles from Athens across the Tennessee River. It runs long established residential streets alongside a substantial industrial base, and the fencing work splits along much the same line.

Properties nearer the water sit in damper air, and damp air punishes unprotected steel. Galvanized chain link copes. Vinyl coated chain link copes better, because the jacket adds a second barrier over the zinc. Aluminum does not care either way, since it never rusts.
